Fire in a Bottle Chemistry Demonstration

This fire bottle is a quick and easy alternative to the Barking Dog chemistry demonstration. The bottle displays a bright blue (or other colors) light, plus it emits a woof or bark. Several websites call this project a bottle fire vortex or bottle fire  tornado, but the flame propagates as a wave down the bottle, without spinning. Of course, you could spin the bottle on a carousel or turntable. Fire Bottle Materials Glass bottleAlcohol, at least 70 percentLong-handled lighter Procedure Pour a small amount of fuel into the bottle. You want 1/2 cm to 1 cm of liquid in the bottom of the bottle.Cap the bottle or cover the top with your hand, whichever works.Shake the bottle.If you have fuel on the lip of the bottle, wipe it off or blow on the bottle to evaporate the fuel. Otherwise, there is a good chance the flame will be restricted to this small area of the bottle. It is not a concern; just reduces the quality of the display.Carefully light the vapor just inside the mouth of the bottle.The flame should go out on its own, but if it does not, simply cover the mouth of the bottle and suffocate the flame.Each run uses up the oxygen in the bottle, which the fire needs in order to burn. You will need to blow fresh air into the bottle. You can blow into the bottle or else use a straw or tube. You probably will not need to add more fuel. Just add air, cover and shake the bottle, uncap it, and ignite the vapor.If you like, add a flame colorant to the fuel (e.g., boric acid fo r a green flame). Simply sprinkle some of the colorants into the bottle. Most colorants are not consumed by the flame, so even if you get to a point where you wish to add more fuel, you will not need to add more colorant chemical. Notes on Materials Glass Bottle:  You can use just about any bottle you want, but do be sure it is glass. Plastic  will melt. Also, the shape of the bottle, especially its neck, affects the sound that will be produced. You may wish to experiment with different types of bottles. We have had good success with a glass cola bottle and a large cylindrical glass water bottle. If by some miracle you have a giant graduated cylinder, go for it.Alcohol:  You can use other liquid fuels, too. You want some water in the fuel so that it will stick to the sides of the glass. You can add  chemicals to color the flame, too. Some of these will dissolve better in pure alcohol, which you can dilute with water or mix with rubbing alcohol.Long Handled Lighter:  You could drop a match in the bottle, but then you will need to fish it out to repeat the project. A flame  will shoot out the top of the bottle, so dont use a short lighter. A candle is another good option. Safety Info This is fire. It can burn you. Perform this project under competent adult supervision. Do not set the fuel next to your glass container. Do not perform this project on a flammable surface or near flammable objects (e.g., do not lean into the bottle with long hair, do not light the bottle next to drapes, etc.). Do be prepared to put the fire out in case of an accident. Having said all that, this project works well indoors. Actually, we recommend you try it indoors because you will get the best effect in still air, with no wind. 5000 people under the age of 25 with 2000of those teenagers are dying each year, but not from cancer or car accidents, but by their own hands. These children have made the choice to take their lives by committing suicide. Andrea Young Ward explains how and why teens make the decision of taking their lives in her story â€Å"Many Factors Contribute to Teen Suicide†. An Ad From Nike Called Unlimited You - 1106 Words

The ad I choose to analyze was an ad from Nike called â€Å"Unlimited You†. The people that are depicted in the ad are children, amateur athletes, pro athletes and anyone who has a dream that may seem impossible to achieve. Both male and female are represented in this ad. There are very well skilled men and women in this ad that are competing in high competition. There facial expressions in the ad shows their competitive side meaning they have fierce looks. They are dressed in uniform for whatever sport they are playing which include: running, golf, tennis, swimming, soccer, gymnastics, wrestling, basketball, baseball, skateboarding, football and martial arts. In this ad specifically it does not promote one specific product however it promotes the companies brand by advertising on these athletes. The way Nike used their angles to make this video was very creative. It showed realistic and unrealistic events in their ad. For example, it showed Orlando Magic’s superstar Aa ron Gordon getting into a car crash and jumping off the car and performing a dunk. It was very unique yet very creative. The lighting used was to make sure it seemed like you were watching the actual sporting event. There were many different surroundings in each of the clips but they always emphasized the athlete. There were a wide range of colors used in this ad depending on what scenery they were at. The subject of illegal migration into the United States is a very controversial and challenging issue; but overall America’s systematic approach for regulating illegal immigrants entering our country has failed. It pertains to millions of individuals and families journeying to the bulls-eye country of America without proper documentation; but it also consists of people entering the country legally, but they violate the terms of their approved visas and passports by permanently residing here, rather than the allotted time frame they’re given. According to Turk (2005), â€Å"As the project manager you need to build a staff that can get the job done. You need the right mix of expertise, creativity, flexibility, enthusiasm, and experience. † ( p. 30). These key attributes will work to motivate other team members and assist the manager in establishing the appropriate balance to the team. Team Diversity When forming effective teams, managers must consider team synergy an important goal, and diversity plays a major role. Managers should strive to create the appropriate balance between workers and their personality types. As Martinette (2005) points out, â€Å"Work groups and teams that have too many people of one type or another soon find themselves out of balance. † (p. 117). â€Å"For good problem solving and decision making, you need a diversity of personality types. † (Hill, 2005, p. 37). Striking the proper team balance is important and balance does not mean people with a background and disposition just like the boss. Many types of diversity are to be expected on any team, and can be the source of many differences of opinion. Age, gender, ethnicity, and personality differences can affect the team’s cohesiveness, or non-cohesiveness as may be. Obviously, with a diverse group the possibilities of conflict increase, but so do the possibilities of a greater outcome. Hill (2005) gives us an example, â€Å"Meetings are more raucous and consensus is harder to achieve. But these arguments often spark new ideas. Differences in world view can create dynamic conversations and results, if the team can learn how to effectively deal with conflict. Good communication practices as well as building personal relationships are both key to working with remote employees. As Pauleen (2003) states, â€Å"Effective communications is a key to successful virtual teams, and one of the keys to effective communications is how well team members are able to build and maintain their personal relationships. † (p. 229). Video conferencing works well and provides a company’s employees with a visual link that serves to backfill for the lack of face-to-face communications that employees would have if they were collocated. Trust and Motivation An important goal for managers, in addressing and monitoring a team’s behavior, is to develop the trust of his or her team members. Employees that trust one another will often be motivated to go the extra mile in meeting and exceeding team objectives. Team motivation is extremely important because it makes the team more effective. Stephen Covey (1989) states: â€Å"Unclear expectations in the area of goals also undermine communication and trust. † (p. 194). If goals seem unachievable, it could affect the teams buy-in to the whole process. Giving, receiving and being responsive to feedback should be a fundamental part of the team process. Conflict According to DeJanasz, Dewd and Schneider (2001), â€Å"Conflict is any situation in which there are incompatible goals, cognitions, or emotions within or between individuals or groups that lead to opposition or antagonistic interaction. † (p. 243). Conflict among team members is inevitable and desirable, because â€Å"conflict in itself is not the problem. It is, rather, our reactions to it that determine the impact, and causes us to characterize it as a negative experience. † (Porter, 2005, p. 1). It should be anticipated that the team will disagree, and therefore, conflict should be considered a part of the process. â€Å"In fact, if we define conflicts as simply differences of opinion, this is exactly what we want to happen. In bringing together a diverse group of experts, we expect and want these differences to surface because, in the end, we expect a better outcome or result. (The Team, p. 171). If everyone agreed, there would be no reason to team up to resolve a situation, or to come up with new ideas. Teams are developed for a specific purpose, and diverse opinions, ideas, and perspectives will make the team most effective. In my personal sphere, I wish to achieve a stable life after five years and see myself contributing actively to my family and also being a reliable source of income upon whom my family can depend without any doubts. Ethical orientation is something that I believe in and perceive it as one of the most important aspects of a person and a life should never abandon ethical views for anything. Even in my academic life, I try to maintain this and learn about my subject as ethically as I can. Cheating is sort of a short cut that does not ultimately benefit a person and I avoid this the most when it comes to an academic life. My entire future life and career will heavily be dependent upon the knowledge that I will be gaining in this stage of life and if that very knowledge is flawed then it will pose to be a huge a problem later on. Short-term and long-term goals My professional goals are set in a very realistic manner that would be pertaining to feasibility and attainable. As a short-term goal, I have aimed to be able to successfully implement my skills and knowledge to my career and use those as the background for learning further and intake as much experience as possible during the first few years of my professional life.
